Potluck Supper
Program: Hope for Haiti
After explaining why a country for which there had been such high hopes
became so impoverished and has so many obstacles to overcome, Dr. Mildred
Olivier – a veteran of regular medical missions to Haiti since
1993 and a member of the Task Force on Haitian Recovery following the
2010 earthquake – will detail the progress that is being made
via the concerted efforts of many.
Program: Dream Act – Understanding Undocumented Students
Daysi Diaz Strong, Manager of Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program at
ECC, will lead a panel which will share perspectives they have developed
from studying the components of the Federal Dream Act and working with
undocumented students.

Program: Enriching Your Life with Laughter
Jill League, a certified laughter leader with the Education and Community
Wellness Department of Sherman Hospital, will conduct a workshop on
what laughter can do for us physically, mentally and emotionally.

Program: Bringing Nature Home
Local gardeners June Kiebler and Jean Muntz will lead an interactive
program based on Doug Tallamy’s book, Bringing Nature Home, to
demonstrate how we can sustain biodiversity of native plants and wildlife
in our own back yards.
Program: The Cost of War, the Price of Peace: A Report Back from Travel
to Afghanistan
Kathy Kelly, a 2003 Nobel Peace Prize nominee and coordinator of Voices
for Creative Nonviolence, will recount her perspective developed from
five visits to Afghanistan since 2010 where she gained insight from
Afghan health care professionals, journalists, agronomists, students,
and laborers
regarding the cost of the U.S. war in Afghanistan.
This program is co-sponsored by Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice,
the Elgin League of Women Voters and Gail Borden Public Library and is

Program: The Folk Art Dolls of Helen Bullard
Our own Rachel Campbell will acquaint us with the work of Elgin native
Helen Bullard, who became a noted doll artisan and a leader in the
folk art culture of Tennessee.
Program: Illinois Tax Policy and Our State Fiscal Crisis
Dr. Ron Baiman of the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, a bi-partisan
think tank, will explain how ineffective tax policies have contributed
to Illinois’ current budget crisis and what changes might alleviate
education, social services and pension funding issues.
This program is co-sponsored by the Elgin League of Women Voters and
Gail Borden Public Library and is open to the public.
Annual May Dinner Meeting
Join us for social time followed by dinner as we celebrate our branch's
accomplishments this past year and recognize our Name Grant recipients.
Dinner music will be provided by our own Wilma Booth.
